My son is currently in 7th grade. In 6th grade he did not pass the staar assessment which resulted in him losing his elective for 7th grade. When we picked up his 7th grade schedule they had placed him in a staar prep class. I went to the school and refused the class and told them to give him his original elective he had chosen. After much argument they told me it was full and placed him in a teen leadership class. What can I do this year to ensure he gets the elective of his choice instead of waiting until the beginning of the next school year to argue with the school again? He will not be taking the staar assessment. Course selections are being handed out next week.

First and foremost, I would be very up front with them. Definitely follow up at the end of the year and then also before the new year starts. Make sure you specifically tell them that you do not want him in any STAAR prep classes.
